This trick, traditionally called "Karakuri Byobu" or "Obi Karakuri" (in English, it's described as a type of flexagon), creates mesmerizing effects by punching holes in a paper mechanism, causing images to appear or change. This simple prop, created by combining three sheets of paper, is easy to use and allows you to create an inexplicable series of magical changes. Although the trick is simple to perform, it will take some time to explain.
Effect:
The magician takes a small pack of cards from the deck and shuffles them. He divides them into two piles and asks a spectator to interrupt him at any time. The cards at the top of the two piles become two selections, one for each spectator. One is the Eight of Hearts, the other the Queen of Hearts, but the magician doesn't know this. Each spectator looks at their selection and memorizes it. The performer produces a piece of paper painted with red and white squares and with holes in the shape of hearts all over it.
After showing both sides of the paper, he explains that they will guess which two cards they are thinking of. He folds it to reveal two hearts and asks the first spectator, "Is this your card?" "No," he says. The performer folds the paper again to reveal four hearts and shows them to the spectator again, saying, "This is your card, the four of hearts?" "No," says the spectator. "Please give me one last chance. What was your card called?" The spectator replies, "The eight of hearts." The performer tears open the paper to reveal an eight of hearts. Just as quickly, he pulls the paper open completely, and the eight of hearts disappears. Then he turns to the second spectator and asks her to say her card; she says, "Queen of Hearts." He folds the paper, and in an instant, the Queen of Hearts appears on it, as if by magic. And with another flick, the paper is ripped open and shown from both sides—the Queen of Hearts is gone, and the paper is exactly as it was at the beginning.
